A Kalon Internship: Ev Malcolm

Hi folks, Ev the intern here. My last week interning with Kalon Imaging seems like a good time to reflect on all the fun, learning and friendship I’ve experienced over the past four months. I became interested in photography during a Graduate Journalism program at USF St. Petersburg, and began to modestly pursue it as a means of income. I worked for corporate portrait studios and night clubs, and grew my skills little by little.

Available Light Photography

Not every photoshoot takes place on a sunny day, or during the day at all. When the lights go out, it may seem intuitive to grab your flash or break out the portable strobes, but using the light that’s still available can create some great dramatic effects in your images. Here we’ll share some ideas on how to accomplish this.

Inclement Weather Photography

All photographers heave dealt with the inconvenience of rainstorms ruining their outdoor shoot, especially during a Florida summer. Even when you keep a close eye on the forecast there is no guarantee of long-lasting sunshine, and gray clouds could roll in any time to steal your light and soak you and your subjects.

As Tampa residents, our staff is all too familiar with freak showers and mud patches. We even had to deal with some during the grand opening event  at our location in Carrollwood last weekend. We pulled out all the stops (and canopy tents) to ensure everyone still had a great time and captured great images, and we want you to be able to do the same.

The best photographers see a change in scenery as an opportunity to capture new and unexpected images. Rain inspires a range of emotions from childlike glee to somber reflection. The people and scenery captured on a rainy day can provide a nice break from the usual sunny smiles sought in most outdoor photo sessions, but you have to know how to make the most of the occasion.

The Digital Arms Race

Megapixel counts and LCD screen sizes in cell phone cameras are growing every year. As a result, handheld devices have come to fill much of the niche previously occupied by dedicated cameras and photographers. A sort of arms race is occurring as portable, convenient camera apps receive upgrades that allow them to challenge the image quality of professional-grade cameras.

At least, that’s the case at first glance.

Aesthetically, a portrait taken using a Samsung Galaxy S5 may be comparable to one taken by a Canon T5i, but while cell phone photographers have less to carry, they also have less to work with, and less to bring home.

World Photography Day

From Daguerrotypes…
This past Tuesday was the 175th World Photography Day, which marks the anniversary of the public announcement of the permanent imagery process produced by Louis Daguerre (1839). The Daguerrotype is actually a modification of a method called Heliography (by Joseph Niépce) in which light is shone through an engraving onto a metal plate covered in photosensitive liquids. Daguerre improved upon the process and found a way to make the images permanent, so that continued light exposure would not darken them completely. And from this original snapshot (that had about an 8-hour exposure time) image capture was off and running.
